REGIONAL AND LOCAL DEVELOPMENT
The Decentralisation Law passed in Ghana in 1988 paved the way for the devolution of legislative and executive powers, shifting government tasks from the national and regional levels to the districts and communities. The aim is to relieve the burden on the national administration, to increase the efficiency of public administration and to institute an appropriate distribution of costs between the central government, district administrations and users of public services.
By improving the planning and decision-making capacities of the administrations and representative bodies at district and village level, it aims to secure the long-term success of Ghana's decentralisation policy. Only functioning local government systems are capable of effectively advancing the development process in the regions. The Federal Republic of Germany is supporting the project by seconding several experts, providing training and upgrading for local experts and supplying equipment and materials. It is anticipated that the project will run for a total of 14 years.
