REGIONAL REFRIGERANT MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR 14 SOUTHERN AND EASTERN AFRICAN COUNTRIES
GTZ Proklima developed a project proposal as bilateral
assistance to substitute ozone depleting substances (ODS) with environmental friendly technologies for 15 countries in
East and Southern Africa. The Refrigerant Management Plan was developed as an integrated approach including the
participation of industry, institutions and end-users to phase out ozone depleting substances. The following activities
were identified as being basic to assisting the countries both at the national and the regional level in meeting their
obligations under the Montreal Protocol.
Activities at national level
- Training of refrigeration technicians in good practice
- Demonstration project for alternative refrigerants
- Improvement of proper licensing system; development of a Refrigeration Association
- Recovery and recycling of CFCs
Activities combined at both the national and the regional level
- Implementation and enforcement of regulations and legislation; monitoring and control of ODS
Activities at regional level
- Training of trainers in good refrigeration practices
- Curricula development for technical training institutes
- Public Awareness to promote the new activities and initiatives
